How close was Russia to Pokrovsk by 5 October 2024?

Summary

A look back at reports of the Russian advance on the Donetsk Oblast city and a guided-bomb strike on Kharkiv days earlier.

How near had Russian forces come to Pokrovsk by 5 October 2024? According to the head of the city's military administration, Serhiy Dobriak, who reported on 4 October, they were about 7 kilometres (4.3 miles) away.

Dobriak also said that Russian attacks had destroyed or damaged 80% of the critical infrastructure in Pokrovsk, a city in Donetsk Oblast. The report formed part of the account of the Pokrovsk offensive in the days before 5 October.

Strikes elsewhere

The pressure was not confined to the Donetsk front. On 2 October, a Russian guided bomb hit an apartment building in Kharkiv. At least ten people were injured.

Taken together, the reports from 2 and 4 October showed damage to civilian infrastructure and housing in two parts of Ukraine in the days leading up to 5 October 2024.
