What Zelenskyy's casualty figures said on 9 December 2024

Summary

A look back at the war-loss numbers the Ukrainian president gave on 8 December 2024, and how they sit beside later estimates.

What did Kyiv say about the human cost of the war as of 9 December 2024? The latest public figures had come a day earlier, on 8 December, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave a tally of losses on both sides since Russia's invasion in 2022.

He said 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action and 370,000 wounded. For Russia, he estimated 198,000 soldiers killed and more than 550,000 wounded. The Russian numbers were his estimate, not a confirmed count.

Reading the numbers

On those figures, the wounded outnumbered the killed on each side. The estimated Russian toll, at more than 750,000 killed and wounded combined, was well above the Ukrainian total of 413,000. Both sets covered soldiers only; the statement gave no civilian figures.

A wider range later

Later assessments put the overall picture higher and less precise. A later overview of the war's casualties gives a range of between 1,274,000 and 2 million estimated casualties during the full-scale invasion, covering 24 February 2022 to June 2026. That range is a later estimate and was not available on 9 December 2024. It shows how far the totals have remained uncertain, with the December 2024 statement one data point among many.
