What Zelenskyy's casualty figures revealed on 9 December 2024

Summary
A look back at the casualty numbers the Ukrainian president gave on 8 December 2024, and how they compare with later estimates.
What did Ukraine's president say about the human cost of the war as 9 December 2024 began? A day earlier, on 8 December 2024, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, gave figures for losses on both sides since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
He said 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action and 370,000 wounded. For Russia, he estimated 198,000 soldiers killed and more than 550,000 wounded.
Reading the numbers
Taken at face value, the figures put Russian losses at several times the Ukrainian ones, both for dead and for wounded. The Russian numbers were an estimate by Zelenskyy, not a confirmed count. The Ukrainian numbers were presented as his own account of losses among soldiers.
The figures cover soldiers only. They do not include civilian deaths, so they describe one part of the toll.
A wider frame
Later compilations of the war's casualties give a far larger overall range. Those accounts put estimated casualties during the Russian invasion, from 24 February 2022 to June 2026, at between 1,274,000 and 2 million. That period runs well beyond the covered date, so the comparison is only a rough guide to scale.
The December 2024 statement is nonetheless a marker of how the Ukrainian leadership described the war's cost nearly three years into the invasion.
