Toretsk claim and new jets: 7 February 2025

Summary

A look back at a day when Russia declared Toretsk taken while Ukraine's air force took delivery of Western fighters.

What did the front line and the skies over Ukraine look like on 7 February 2025? Two reports from that day and the one before it point in different directions.

On 7 February 2025, Russia said its forces had taken full control of Toretsk in Donetsk Oblast, after months of urban warfare. The battle for the town had begun in the summer of 2024, during Russia's full-scale invasion. Russian forces had seized the town centre in November 2024. By mid-February 2025, they held practically the whole town.

Reinforcements in the air

A day earlier, on 6 February 2025, the Ukrainian Air Force received the first shipment of Mirage 2000 fighter jets from France. It also received more F-16 Fighting Falcons from the Netherlands. Both deliveries were part of the military aid supplied to Ukraine during the war.

The two reports sit side by side: a claim of full control over a town that had been contested for months, and new aircraft arriving from two European partners.
