What did the 31 January 2025 Odesa strike hit?

Summary
A look back at a ballistic missile attack on Odesa's centre and port, and a deadly drone strike on Sumy a day earlier.
What did Russia's latest strike on Odesa leave behind? On 31 January 2025, Russian forces launched ballistic missiles at the centre of Odesa and its port, severely damaging numerous civilian buildings. Among them was the historic Bristol Hotel. At least two people were reportedly injured.
The attack came a day after another strike on a residential target. On 30 January 2025, a Russian drone hit a multi-storey apartment building in Sumy, Ukraine. Nine people were killed and 13 others were injured.
Taken together, the two incidents show attacks reaching civilian areas in cities far apart: Odesa on the Black Sea coast and Sumy in the country's north-east. In Odesa, the damage covered the city centre as well as the port area. In Sumy, the casualties were concentrated in a single apartment block.
