What happened in the days before 16 February 2025?

Summary

A look back at sanctions and a court decision announced in the days before 16 February 2025, from Kyiv to the Belarus border.

What had the days leading up to 16 February 2025 brought in sanctions and border policy? Three reports from 11 and 13 February give part of the picture.

Sanctions in Kyiv

On 13 February, President Zelensky was reported to be introducing sanctions against several oligarchs and individuals. The list included former president Petro Poroshenko, Viktor Medvedchuk, Kostyantyn Zhevago, Ihor Kolomoisky and Hennadiy Bogolyubov. The reported grounds were suspicion of "state treason" and assisting a terrorist organisation, including their alleged role in undermining national security through unfavourable business deals with Russia.

Action against a hosting provider

On 11 February, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States announced sanctions on a Russian bulletproof hosting services provider. The provider was accused of ignoring law enforcement requests. Two Russians who operate the network were also targeted.

Court to examine pushbacks

Also on 11 February, the European Court of Human Rights said it would consider three cases involving irregular migrants. They allege they were pushed back into Belarus from EU countries. The cases are linked to the border crisis between Belarus and the European Union.

Taken together, the reports show activity on several fronts in the days before 16 February 2025: Ukrainian domestic sanctions, a joint Western move against a Russian online service provider, and a European court preparing to hear migrant pushback complaints.
