What the drone exchanges of 7 July 2025 showed

Summary

A look back at a day of Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian civilians and a Ukrainian strike on a Russian refinery.

What did the drone war look like on 7 July 2025? The reports from that day describe two strikes, one in each direction, and they differ sharply in who bore the cost.

Russia launched more than 100 drones at areas across Ukraine. Ten civilians were killed and 38 others were injured. The reports describe the attacks as spread across the country rather than focused on a single location.

On the same day, the Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out a long-range drone strike on Krasnodar Krai in Russia. The main oil refinery in Ilsky was damaged.

Two different tallies

The figures set side by side show a contrast in what was reported. On the Ukrainian side, the measure was human: ten dead and 38 wounded. On the Russian side, the reported result was damage to an industrial facility, with no casualty figure given.

The two events were not linked in the reports, and it would be wrong to read one as a response to the other. Taken together, though, they show how drones had become a tool used by both sides, reaching far from the front line. Russia's strikes hit areas across Ukraine, while Ukraine's reached a refinery in Krasnodar Krai.
