Kyiv under fire as NATO announces €35bn aid

Summary

A retrospective on 23 June 2025, when a large Russian strike hit the Ukrainian capital and a major European and Canadian aid package was announced.

What did 23 June 2025 mean for Ukraine's security? It brought a deadly attack on its capital and, on the same day, an announcement of substantial foreign support.

Russian forces launched a large-scale drone and missile strike on Kyiv. The attack damaged residential areas, hospitals and sports infrastructure. Nine people were killed and at least 33 others were injured.

The same day, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced that European countries and Canada would send Ukraine a combined aid package worth €35 billion (US$40.3 billion).

The two developments, reported on the same date, set the scale of the strikes on civilian areas of the capital beside the scale of the support pledged to Ukraine by its European partners and Canada.
