Who took over Ukraine's government after Shmyhal?

Summary

A look back at the parliamentary vote that installed a new prime minister and the day that followed it.

Who was running Ukraine's government on 18 July 2025? The answer had changed the day before, on 17 July 2025, when the Verkhovna Rada approved Yulia Svyrydenko as prime minister.

The vote made her the successor to Denys Shmyhal, who had held the post until then. As reported at the time, the Ukrainian parliament appointed her as the country's new prime minister, and the Rada's decision formally confirmed her in the role.

By 18 July 2025, then, the change of leadership at the head of the cabinet had already taken place. The day marked the first full day of the handover, with Svyrydenko installed and Shmyhal's tenure as prime minister over.

The reports from 17 July 2025 describe the appointment itself: a parliamentary approval and a succession. They name the new prime minister and her predecessor, and that is the core of what was established as the government entered its new phase.
