What happened in Kyiv on 31 July 2025?

Summary

A look back at a Russian drone and cruise missile attack on the Ukrainian capital that killed at least 31 people.

What happened in Kyiv on 31 July 2025? Russian forces launched drones and cruise missiles at the Ukrainian capital, killing at least 31 people and injuring more than 150 others. At least one tower block collapsed completely.

The strike came two days after another wave of attacks across Ukraine. On 29 July 2025, Russian drone and cruise missile strikes killed at least 25 people and injured dozens more. Among the dead were 16 inmates killed in an airstrike on a prison in Zaporizhzhia.

Taken together, the two days showed civilians bearing the heaviest toll of the strikes. In Kyiv, the collapse of a residential tower block marked the attack of 31 July 2025. The scale of the injuries, more than 150 people, set it apart from the earlier strikes of that week.

The figures were those reported at the time, and casualty counts from such attacks can change as rescue work continues.
