What was expected of the Alaska summit?

Summary
A look back at the eve of the planned meeting between the US and Russian presidents, and what followed.
What did the world expect from a meeting announced for Alaska? On 14 August 2025, the day before it took place, the plan was already set. On 10 August, US president Donald Trump had announced that he would meet Russian president Vladimir Putin in Alaska on 15 August to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
The announcement placed peace negotiations in the Russian invasion of Ukraine within the wider frame of Russia–United States relations. By 14 August, the talks were a day away.
What happened next
The summit was held on 15 August 2025 at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. The main topic was the war in Ukraine. It ended without an agreement being announced.
Trump later suggested that, in his view, the onus was now on Ukraine to cede territory in order to end the war. That was a later development and not known on 14 August.
So the eve of the summit was a moment of anticipation. The meeting was confirmed, the subject was the war, and the outcome was still unwritten.
