What the week to 25 August 2025 showed

Summary
A look back at the security picture on 25 August 2025, after a week of mass strikes, a drone crash in Poland and a prisoner swap.
What did the security picture look like on 25 August 2025? The reports from the preceding days point to a war fought on several fronts at once: in the air over Ukraine, at sea near Russia's coast and in the exchange of prisoners.
Strikes on infrastructure and civilians
On 19 August, Russian forces launched 270 drones and ten missiles at critical infrastructure in Poltava and Chernihiv Oblasts. Two days later, on 21 August, a combined overnight attack was larger: at least 570 drones and 40 hypersonic, ballistic and cruise missiles were launched across Ukraine. Two cruise missiles struck an American electronics factory in Mukachevo, Zakarpattia Oblast, and over a dozen people were injured.
A spillover into Poland
On 20 August, shortly after midnight, a Russian military drone exploded when it crashed in Osiny, Puławy County, Poland. The reports described the incident but did not detail any further consequences, so it stands as a marker of how close the air war came to the territory of a neighbouring state.
Incident at sea
On 22 August, a naval drone operated by Ukrainian military intelligence exploded in Novorossiysk, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, after Russian military divers had seized it. Five of the divers were killed.
A humanitarian exchange
The most constructive development came on 24 August, when Russia and Ukraine swapped 146 prisoners each after mediation by the United Arab Emirates. The exchange took place alongside the strikes, not in place of them.
What the sequence shows
Taken together, the events of 19–24 August show large-scale Russian missile and drone salvoes continuing against Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian targets, Ukrainian naval drones operating near Russia's coast, and a mediated channel that still produced prisoner exchanges. The scale of the 21 August attack, with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in a single night, set the tone for the period, while the Polish crash and the Mukachevo strike in the west showed that the effects were not confined to the front line or to the east.
