What did Poland's Article 4 move mean?

Summary

A look back at Warsaw's appeal to NATO consultations after a Russian drone incursion, and a strike on Kyiv days earlier.

What happened on 10 September 2025, when Poland turned to its allies after Russian drones entered its airspace? Polish prime minister Donald Tusk invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty following the incursion, which formed part of the wider Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The step placed the episode within the framework of Russia-NATO relations and Poland-Russia relations. The incursion was recorded among violations of non-combatant airspaces during the war.

The move came three days after another development in Kyiv. On 7 September 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers building in the Ukrainian capital was set on fire following a Russian strike.

Taken together, the two reports from those days showed the war's effects reaching both the centre of Ukrainian government and the territory of a NATO member state.
