What happened in Ukraine after the Kyiv strikes?

Summary

A look back at the reports of a heavy attack on Kyiv and the sinking of a Ukrainian ship, both dated 28 August 2025.

What did the reports reaching the world on 29 August 2025 describe? Two events from the previous day, 28 August, dominated them: a large Russian strike on Kyiv and the loss of a Ukrainian vessel on the Danube.

The attack on Kyiv

The Russian Armed Forces launched nearly 600 drones and more than 30 ballistic and cruise missiles at Kyiv, as reported at the time. Multiple residential areas were struck. The attack killed 25 people, including four children, and wounded 63 others, among them 11 children.

The ship on the Danube

On the same day, the Ukrainian spy ship Simferopol was sunk by a drone strike in the Danube river. Two people were killed, and several others were left missing or injured.

Taken together, the two reports showed a day of heavy losses for Ukraine, one in its capital and one on a river that forms part of its border region. The figures given at the time, 25 dead in Kyiv and two on the ship, were the initial counts, and the missing from the Simferopol were still unaccounted for.
