Ukraine offers to train Poland against drones

Summary

A look back at Kyiv's announcement, reported on 18 September 2025, that it would share counter-drone expertise with Polish troops and engineers.

What did Kyiv offer Warsaw after Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace? By 19 September 2025, the answer had been announced a day earlier: Ukraine said it would train Polish troops and engineers in counter-drone operations.

The announcement, dated 18 September 2025, followed the incursion of 9 September 2025. At about 11:30 p.m. CEST that night, between 19 and 23 unarmed military drones entered Poland's airspace after allegedly being launched from Russia.

The incursion triggered a Quick Reaction Alert, and the Polish Air Force and other NATO militaries scrambled aircraft. Up to four drones were confirmed shot down, most of them by the Dutch Air Force. Airspace over Warsaw International Airport, Warsaw Modlin Airport, Rzeszów–Jasionka Airport and Lublin Airport was closed while the drones were in Polish airspace.

Poland's prime minister, Donald Tusk, said the drones had posed a direct threat.

The training offer placed Ukraine in the role of adviser to a neighbour facing a threat it had dealt with in its own airspace. The announcement set out the intention to train both troops and engineers in counter-drone operations.
