Why did Poland reopen its Belarus border?

Summary

A look back at the reopening of the Polish–Belarusian frontier after the Russia-led military exercises, and the reasons given for it.

Why did Poland decide to reopen its border with Belarus on 24 September 2025, only days after the Russia-led exercises ended?

According to reports at the time, Warsaw had closed the frontier while the drills were under way. It cited two reasons for reopening it: reduced security risks and economic considerations.

The exercise behind the closure

The drills were Zapad 2025, a joint Russian-Belarusian strategic exercise held in Belarus on 12–16 September 2025. Belarus said they would test the defensive readiness of the Union State, with main activities at central training areas near Barysaw and a reciprocal movement of units between the two states. It was the first Zapad exercise since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Authorities described a scaled-down format, with locations deeper inside Belarus.

Reading the decision

The stated logic was simple. The closure was tied to the exercises, and once the security picture eased, Poland judged that the case for keeping the crossings shut was weaker. Economic considerations were named alongside security as a reason to open them again.

The reopening on 24 September 2025 therefore marked the end of a closure that had been linked to a specific military event rather than an open-ended measure.
