What did 26–27 October 2025 reveal about the war?

Summary

A look back at three deadly incidents reported in the days before 28 October 2025, on both sides of the front line.

What did the reports reaching readers on 28 October 2025 say about the human cost of the war? In the preceding days, three separate incidents had left people dead or injured, in Ukraine, in Russian-controlled Donetsk and in occupied Crimea.

On 26 October, a Russian drone struck a minibus in Mykolaivka, in Sumy Raion, Sumy Oblast. One person was killed and 13 others were injured, two of them seriously. The attack was reported as part of the 2025 Sumy offensive.

The same day, a Ukrainian drone strike hit an apartment building in Russian-controlled Donetsk, Donetsk Oblast. Two people were killed, including an elderly woman, and another person was injured.

On 27 October, a floating crane overturned at the Sevastopol shipbuilding yard, killing two people. The reports on that day described an industrial accident rather than a strike, and did not attribute a cause.

A pattern of civilian exposure

Taken together, the reports from 26 and 27 October show how ordinary settings, a minibus, a residential block and a shipyard, featured in the casualty tallies. The minibus and the apartment building were both hit by drones, one Russian and one Ukrainian, while the shipyard deaths came from a different kind of event.

These were small-scale incidents set against a much larger war, but each ended with people dead, and in Mykolaivka more than a dozen were wounded.
