What the January strikes showed before 23 January

Summary

A look back at Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities in the days before 23 January 2026.

What pattern was visible in Russian attacks on Ukraine by 23 January 2026? The reports from the preceding days pointed to strikes spread across many cities and carried out with different weapons.

On 18 January, Russian drone strikes hit locations across Ukraine, including Dnipro, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Odesa, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia. At least two people were killed and dozens were injured, as reported at the time.

The next day, 19 January, a glide bomb attack on Kharkiv in Kharkiv Oblast killed a woman and injured 11 others.

What the two reports show

Taken together, the two incidents show attacks reaching cities in the north, east, south and centre of the country within a short span. Kharkiv appeared in both reports, struck by drones on 18 January and by a glide bomb on 19 January.

The reports describe civilian casualties in each case: deaths and injuries from drones across several regions, and a further death and 11 injuries from the glide bomb in Kharkiv.
