What the January strikes on Ukrainian cities showed

Summary
A look back at the Russian attacks on Kharkiv and other Ukrainian cities reported in the days before 20 January 2026.
What did Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities look like in the days leading up to 20 January 2026? Reports from 18 and 19 January describe strikes across a wide stretch of the country.
On 18 January, Russian drone strikes hit several cities, including Dnipro, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Odesa, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia. As reported at the time, at least two people were killed and dozens were injured.
On 19 January, a glide bomb attack on Kharkiv, in Kharkiv Oblast, killed a woman and injured 11 other people.
Taken together, the two days of reported attacks touched cities in the north-east, centre, south and east of Ukraine. They involved both drones and glide bombs, and they left civilians dead and wounded.
Kharkiv appeared in both reports, struck by drones on 18 January and by a glide bomb the following day.
