What happened in Staromaryivka before 28 October 2021?

Summary

A look back at reports on the village in the Donbas grey zone and a change at the top of Ukraine's judiciary.

What was happening on the front line in Donbas as of 28 October 2021? A report from 27 October pointed to Staromaryivka, a village in the so-called "grey zone" between Ukraine and the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

According to DPR Foreign Minister Natalya Nikonorova, Ukrainian troops had regained control of the village. The claim came from the DPR side, and it was part of the reporting on the war in Donbas and on Russia–Ukraine relations that preceded 28 October 2021.

A change in the judiciary

In domestic politics, a different development had been recorded a few days earlier. On 22 October 2021, Vsevolod Kniaziev was elected head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine.

The two items were unrelated, but they marked the run-up to 28 October 2021: a contested stretch of ground in Donbas on one side, and a new leader of the country's top court on the other.
