Staromaryivka and a new Supreme Court chief

Summary

A look back at 27 October 2021, when a village in the Donbas grey zone changed hands, and at the court leadership chosen days earlier.

What was happening on the front line in Donbas on 27 October 2021? According to Natalya Nikonorova, foreign minister of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Ukrainian troops regained control that day of the village of Staromaryivka, which lay in the so-called "grey zone" between Ukraine and the DPR.

The claim came from the DPR side, and it was reported under the heading of the war in Donbas and Russia–Ukraine relations.

A court leadership decision days earlier

A few days before, on 22 October 2021, Vsevolod Kniaziev was elected head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine. The election set the leadership of the country's top court at the end of that month.

The two items were unrelated, but together they show the range of Ukrainian political news in the last week of October 2021: a contested stretch of ground in Donbas, and a judicial appointment in Kyiv.
