Who shot at Serhiy Shefir's car near Kyiv?

Summary

A look back at the attack on a vehicle carrying a close Zelensky associate outside the Ukrainian capital.

Who opened fire on the car of one of the Ukrainian president's closest officials? That question arose on 22 September 2021, when gunmen attacked a vehicle carrying Serhiy Shefir near the village of Lisnyky, outside Kyiv.

Shefir was described in reports at the time as an official close to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukrainian-language reports identified him as the president's first aide. The shooting wounded the driver of the car. The attack was deemed an assassination attempt against Shefir.

The reports named the attackers only as unknown persons, and the gunmen were not identified in the coverage from that day. What the reports did establish was the place, the target and the injury: shots fired at a car on the approach to the capital, an aide of the head of state in the vehicle, and a wounded driver.
