Kyiv and Kryvyi Rih: two news stories from August 2021

Summary

A look back at two reports from mid-August 2021, one about an evacuation from Afghanistan and one about a death in Kryvyi Rih.

What did Ukrainian news look like on 20 August 2021? Two reports from the preceding days frame that date, one from abroad and one from home.

On 17 August 2021, it was reported that Sahraa Karimi had been evacuated from Afghanistan to Kyiv after the Taliban took Kabul. She was a well-known Afghan film director and the general director of the state film company Afghan Film. Her arrival in the Ukrainian capital was part of the aftermath of Kabul's capture.

Two days earlier, on 15 August 2021, the mayor of Kryvyi Rih, Kostiantyn Pavlov, was found dead in his home. The report concerned a local leader in a Ukrainian city and was unconnected to events in Afghanistan.

Taken together, the two reports show the range of news Ukrainians were following around 20 August 2021: a foreign crisis that reached Kyiv through one evacuee, and the loss of a city's mayor.
