Washington's new Russia sanctions after Salisbury attack

Summary

A look back at the US sanctions announced over the Novichok poisoning, and a separate measure against a Russian bank days earlier.

What did Washington do on 8 August 2018 to answer the use of a Novichok nerve agent in the United Kingdom? It imposed new sanctions on Russia over the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal.

The move came a day after the UK said it would seek the extradition of suspects from Russia. The two steps, one British and one American, followed in quick succession.

A second track of sanctions

The measures were not the only US penalties on Russia in early August. On 3 August 2018, the United States sanctioned a Russian bank that had facilitated a transaction for a North Korean on an American blacklist.

The two cases were separate. One concerned the nerve agent attack in the UK; the other concerned a financial transaction involving a North Korean. Taken together, they show Washington using sanctions against Russian targets on more than one front within a single week.
