What happened in the region on 29 June 2021?

Summary

A retrospective on two developments reported around 29 June 2021: naval exercises in the Black Sea and tornado recovery in the Czech Republic.

What was the regional picture on 29 June 2021? Two developments reported in the preceding days framed it: military exercises in the Black Sea and a disaster in southeastern Czech Republic.

On 28 June 2021, the Sea Breeze military exercises began in the Black Sea. They were reported as the largest in the history of the exercises.

Four days earlier, on 24 June 2021, a rare and powerful tornado passed through several villages in South Moravia, in the southeast of the Czech Republic, causing catastrophic damage. The mayor of Hrušky said much of the village had been destroyed. Five people were killed and 150 others were injured.

Rescue teams from neighbouring Austria and Slovakia were deployed to the region.

The two stories were unrelated, but both were part of the news from Ukraine's neighbourhood as 29 June 2021 began: one a show of military activity at sea, the other a natural disaster that drew cross-border emergency help.
