What did 15 October 2019 look like for Kyiv?

Summary
A retrospective on the Ukraine-linked political stories that framed mid-October 2019, from a marathon press event to arrests in New York.
What was Ukraine's political picture on 15 October 2019? Two reports from the days just before that date help to answer it: one about Kyiv's president facing journalists, the other about a US scandal that drew Ukraine into American politics.
A marathon press event
On 10 October 2019, President Volodymyr Zelensky held a press conference that lasted more than 14 hours. As reported at the time, he answered over 500 questions from almost 300 journalists. It was described as the longest press conference in world history.
Arrests in New York
The same day, a spokesman for the District Court for the SDNY said that two associates of Rudy Giuliani had been arrested for campaign finance violations. The charges were connected to efforts to discredit presidential candidate Joe Biden.
The arrests belonged to what became known as the 2019 Trump–Ukraine scandal. That scandal arose from attempts by US president Donald Trump to press Ukraine to investigate his political rival Joe Biden, and so potentially to damage Biden's campaign for the 2020 Democratic Party presidential nomination. Giuliani, Trump's personal lawyer, was among those enlisted to apply that pressure. Contacts between the White House and the Ukrainian government had led to a phone call between Trump and Zelensky on 25 July 2019.
Two stories, one week
Taken together, the two reports show Ukraine's leadership in the middle of October 2019 both seeking to answer questions at home and being drawn into a dispute in Washington that was producing legal consequences in New York.
