What had Kyiv decided by 27 May 2019?

Summary

A look back at two decisions taken in the days before 27 May 2019: an early parliamentary election and a new Ukrainian orthography.

What was the political picture in Kyiv on 27 May 2019? It had been shaped by two decisions taken in the preceding week, one on the country's parliament and one on its written language.

On 21 May 2019, Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, issued a decree ending the powers of the eighth-convocation Verkhovna Rada. The same decree set an early parliamentary election for 21 July 2019.

On 22 May 2019, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a new edition of the Ukrainian orthography. It had been prepared by the Ukrainian National Commission on Orthography.

Taken together, the two decisions meant that by 27 May 2019 the country had a fixed date for a new parliamentary vote and a government-approved revision of its spelling rules.
