What was left unresolved on 20 January 2020?

Summary

A look back at two stories that shaped Ukraine's news on 17 January 2020 and were still unsettled by 20 January: Kyiv's government crisis and Iran's handling of Flight 752.

Where did Ukraine's political and diplomatic stories stand on 20 January 2020? Both had reached a pause after a turbulent Friday, 17 January, and neither had been settled.

A prime minister who stayed

On 17 January, Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk submitted his resignation. The move followed the leak earlier that week of an audio clip in which he was allegedly heard criticising President Volodymyr Zelensky's economic policies. Zelensky subsequently announced that Honcharuk would be allowed to keep his position. The episode left a government that had survived its own crisis, with the leaked recording still hanging over the relationship between the president and his prime minister.

Anger in Iran over Flight 752

The same day, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei gave a Friday sermon, his first in eight years. He defended the Revolutionary Guards over the accidental killing of passengers aboard Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752. He also praised Operation Martyr Soleimani for delivering what he called a "slap on the face" to the United States. His remarks came as public anger mounted against the Iranian government over its handling of the disaster.

The aircraft had been shot down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on 8 January 2020, and the revelation prompted anti-government protests. These formed part of the wider unrest in Iran that January, which followed the crackdown on the 2019 protests.

Why the weekend mattered

By 20 January, the two stories gave Kyiv a double test: a government that had weathered an embarrassing leak, and a tragedy involving a Ukrainian airline whose aftermath was still playing out in Iran's streets and in its leadership's rhetoric. Neither story had a final outcome on that date, and that uncertainty defined the moment.
