What happened around 26 September 2021 in Europe?

Summary

A look back at two reports from the days before 26 September 2021: a FIFA sanction on Hungary and Poland's accusations over deaths at the Belarus border.

What was Europe dealing with in the days before 26 September 2021? Two reports from that period, one from football and one from the Polish–Belarusian border, show the picture.

FIFA sanctions Hungary

On 21 September 2021, FIFA fined the Hungarian Football Federation US$216,000. It also ordered the Hungarian national team to play their next two World Cup qualification home matches behind closed doors. The sanctions followed incidents of racist behaviour among Hungarian fans during a match against England on 2 September. The matches were part of qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Deaths at the Polish–Belarusian border

On 20 September 2021, Poland accused Russia and Belarus of orchestrating a wave of illegal immigration. The accusation came after four people were found dead at the Polish–Belarusian border the previous day. The reports were part of the 2021 Belarus–European Union border crisis.
