Sea Breeze begins as Poland ends Afghan mission

Summary

A look back at two developments reported around 1 July 2021: large naval exercises in the Black Sea and the last Polish troops leaving Afghanistan.

What was happening on 1 July 2021 at the edges of Europe and beyond? Two reports from the preceding days framed that date.

On 28 June 2021, the Sea Breeze military exercises began in the Black Sea. They were reported as the largest in the exercise's entire history, and they were under way as July began.

On 30 June 2021, the last Polish troops left Afghanistan, ending Poland's involvement in the war there. Around 33,000 Polish troops had served in Afghanistan over the course of the war, and 44 of them were killed in action.

The two reports were unconnected. One described a large exercise at sea under way on Ukraine's southern flank. The other marked the end of a long deployment by a neighbouring country far from home.
