Kyiv and Kryvyi Rih: two stories from August 2021

Summary

A look back at two reports from mid-August 2021, one about an evacuation from Afghanistan to Kyiv and one about a mayor found dead.

What did Ukraine's news look like on 19 August 2021? Two reports from the preceding days set the tone, one about arrival and one about loss.

On 17 August 2021, it was reported that Sahraa Karimi had been evacuated from Afghanistan to Kyiv after the Taliban took Kabul. Karimi is a well-known Afghan film director and was general director of the state film company Afghan Film. Her evacuation to the Ukrainian capital came as the Taliban's takeover of Kabul upended life in the Afghan capital.

Two days earlier, on 15 August 2021, Kostiantyn Pavlov, the mayor of Kryvyi Rih, was found dead in his home. The report gave no further detail in the material available at the time, and this retrospective does not add any.

The two stories were unrelated. Together they show how, in the days before 19 August 2021, Ukraine was both a destination for people leaving Afghanistan and a country absorbing the news of a local leader's death.
