Who led Ukraine's parliament after Razumkov's removal?

Summary

A look back at the change of speaker in the Verkhovna Rada in early October 2021, days before 11 October 2021.

What had changed at the top of Ukraine's parliament by 11 October 2021? In the days before that date, the Verkhovna Rada had removed one speaker and chosen another.

On 7 October 2021, the Verkhovna Rada decided to dismiss Dmytro Razumkov from the post of speaker. As reported at the time, the dismissal followed his disagreements with President Volodymyr Zelensky and with the stance of the ruling Servant of the People party on legislation aimed at reducing the influence of Ukrainian oligarchs.

On 8 October 2021, the chamber elected Ruslan Stefanchuk as its new speaker. The change therefore took place over two consecutive days, and by 11 October 2021 parliament already had a new chair.

The vote took place in the 9th convocation of the Verkhovna Rada, the unicameral parliament that meets in Kyiv. That convocation began its term on 29 August 2019, following the last session of the 8th Verkhovna Rada.

The episode set the political backdrop for the days that followed: a speaker removed amid a dispute over oligarch-related legislation, and a successor installed within a day.
