What did Boris Paton's death and Lithuania's sanctions mean?

Summary

A look back at two developments reported around 20 August 2020, one in Ukrainian science and one in Belarus's neighbourhood.

What was reported in the days before 20 August 2020, and why does it matter in retrospect? Two items stand out, one for Ukraine and one for its region.

On 19 August 2020, Borys Paton died at the age of 101. He was a prominent Ukrainian scientist and had served as President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from 1962 to 2020. His tenure spanned the whole of that period, so his death closed a nearly six-decade chapter in the academy's leadership.

On 18 August 2020, Lithuanian MPs approved economic sanctions against Belarus over the contested presidential elections. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius said his country was sending a strong message to the world. He also said Lithuania would not recognise Alexander Lukashenko as President.

The two stories are unrelated, but both show institutions facing a change in the status quo: one a long-serving scientific leadership, the other a neighbour's refusal to accept a disputed election result.
