In Ukraine, a member of parliament, Valerii Davydenko, was found shot dead in Kyiv on 23 May 2020. Two days earlier, on 21 May 2020, a local resident in the Zhytomyr region killed seven people in the course of a conflict.
Further afield, on 26 May 2020 the United States Africa Command accused Russia of deploying fighter jets to eastern Libya. According to the accusation, the aircraft were to provide air support to Russian mercenaries allied to Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. Haftar was locked in a civil war with the UN-recognised Government of National Accord.
In Europe, on 21 May 2020 the European Court of Justice ruled that Hungarian authorities had circumvented EU law. The court found that Afghan and Iranian asylum seekers had been held in unlawful detention at a camp near the Serbian border.
