What did early August 2020 hold for Ukraine?

Summary

A look back at two reports from the final days of July 2020, as 2 August 2020 began.

What was the news picture in Ukraine and its neighbourhood on 2 August 2020? Two reports from the preceding days framed it: one about a road accident in Crimea, the other about a fragile ceasefire in the east.

On 31 July 2020, a minibus accident in Crimea, a disputed territory of Ukraine and Russia, left at least nine people dead and another nine wounded.

Four days earlier, on 27 July 2020, Ukraine's military said pro-Russian separatists had violated a ceasefire in Eastern Ukraine only hours after it was declared. According to the military, the separatists opened fire on Ukrainian positions with anti-tank grenade launchers and small arms. Ukrainian forces, it said, did not return fire.

The two reports are unrelated in nature, but together they show the mix of everyday tragedy and wartime tension that marked the region as August 2020 began.
