Kyiv's response to the 11 November 2018 votes

Summary

A look back at the reaction to elections held in the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR, and at a parliamentary resolution adopted days earlier.

What did Ukraine and its partners make of the elections held in the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR? By 13 November 2018, two days after the vote on 11 November, the reaction was already clear.

The European Union, the United States and Japan said that holding the elections violated the Minsk agreements. Germany and France went further, regarding the elections as illegal. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that Ukraine would not recognise the vote.

A parliamentary decision days earlier

On 8 November 2018, shortly before the elections, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution on marking at state level the 75th anniversary of the start of the deportation of Ukrainians from Poland in 1944–1951.

The two items concerned different matters, but both were part of the political agenda in Kyiv in the days leading up to 13 November 2018.
