What the Sumy and Kyiv strikes of 9 September showed

Summary

A look back at two days of Russian drone and missile attacks that hit a Kyiv-wide set of sites and a shopping centre in Sumy.

What happened on 9 September 2026, and what had come the day before? A Russian drone strike hit a shopping centre in Sumy, killing two people and injuring 20 others.

The Sumy attack followed a heavy assault on the capital. On 8 September, Russia launched drones and missiles at Kyiv after a weekend pause in strikes. Five people were killed and at least 10 were injured. Civilian infrastructure was damaged at no fewer than 16 locations, and fires broke out in five districts.

Two cities, two days

Taken together, the reports describe consecutive days of attacks on civilian sites in two Ukrainian cities. In Kyiv, the strikes came after a short lull at the weekend, and the damage was spread across the city. In Sumy, the target was a commercial building rather than a military site, and the casualties were mostly injuries: 20 injured against two dead.

The wider pattern

The two days fit into a longer record. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has said that Russian forces exposed civilians to unnecessary and disproportionate harm, including through weapons with wide-area effects fired into populated areas. As of 2026, the toll of civilian deaths from such attacks stood at between the UN-documented 16,000 and an estimated 40,000.

Russian strikes have also hit Ukrainian infrastructure, in particular the power system. By mid-2024, Ukraine had only a third of its pre-war electricity generating capacity, and some gas distribution and district heating had also been hit.

The reports from 8 and 9 September do not detail what was damaged at the 16 locations in Kyiv, or which systems were used in Sumy beyond the drone strike. What they do establish is the human cost: seven people killed and at least 30 injured across the two days.
