Did Ukraine's parliament legalise medical cannabis?

Summary

A look back at the Verkhovna Rada vote on medical cannabis products, and at the NATO appeal made a day earlier.

What did Ukraine's parliament decide on 7 April 2021? The Verkhovna Rada voted to legalise the use of medical cannabis products, a step that changed the country's rules on cannabis in a medical setting.

The vote came as security concerns dominated the political agenda. On 6 April 2021, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on NATO to hasten Ukraine's accession to the military alliance. He pointed to a growing build-up of Russian troops and military hardware on the country's borders.

He also asked NATO to help bring an end to the ongoing conflict in the Donbas with pro-Russian separatists.

Taken together, the two days showed parliament acting on a domestic health measure while the president pressed an international appeal over security. The reports from the period do not link the two events.
