What did Ukraine's parliament decide for ATO participants?

Summary

A look back at a law on disability groups for anti-terrorist operation participants, passed a day before the covered date, and an arrest that drew attention days earlier.

What was happening in Ukrainian politics on 14 March 2018? The day followed a legislative step taken on 13 March 2018, when the Verkhovna Rada passed law No. 7161. It amended the law on the rehabilitation of disabled people in Ukraine, addressing how a disability group is established for participants in the anti-terrorist operation, known as the ATO.

The measure concerned people who had served in the operation in the country's east, and it changed the existing rehabilitation law rather than creating a new one.

An arrest days earlier

On 8 March 2018, a separate story had emerged from the line of contact. Volodymyr Ruban, head of the Centre for the Liberation of Prisoners, was detained at the Maiorske checkpoint. He was stopped during an attempt to transport weapons and ammunition illegally out of the ATO zone.

The two items were unrelated, but both touched on the operation in the east: one in parliament, the other at a crossing point.
