What happened on the Belarus–Poland border?

Summary

A look back at the border confrontation near Bruzgi and the diplomatic row that preceded it.

What was unfolding on the Belarus–Poland border on 9 November 2021? The day came after a sharp escalation on 8 November, when a large crowd of migrants, escorted by the Belarusian military, tried to break through the frontier near Bruzgi in Belarus's Grodno Region.

The attempt was part of what was described as the 2021 Belarus–European Union border crisis. Several migrants were reported dead. Seven were found dead on the Polish side of the border, and a few more deaths were reported in Belarus.

A tense run-up

The confrontation followed an earlier incident. On 3 November, Poland summoned the Belarusian chargé d'affaires after Belarusian troops crossed into Polish territory overnight. A Polish government spokesman said the Belarusian personnel advanced 300 metres (980 ft) into Poland and returned across the border only when a Polish patrol confronted them.

Taken together, the two episodes showed a frontier where military personnel, migrants and diplomats were all involved within a single week. The deaths reported on 8 November added a human toll to what had until then been chiefly a diplomatic dispute.
