What did Ukraine's election season begin with?

Summary

A look back at the political and trade developments that framed the start of 2019 for Kyiv.

What was the political backdrop as Ukraine entered the new year? On 2 January 2019, the country was in the first days of a presidential election campaign, which had begun on 31 December 2018.

The campaign opened alongside a trade measure from Moscow. On 29 December 2018, the government of the Russian Federation widened its sanctions against Ukraine. Under the decision, the import of industrial goods, agricultural products and foodstuffs from Ukraine was banned, according to an approved list.

The two developments came within days of each other, at the turn of the year. The campaign had just formally started, and the expanded Russian restrictions had been announced only a few days earlier.
