What happened on 5 October 2018 in Kyiv and beyond

Summary

A retrospective on a day that brought the end of a 145-day hunger strike, a boxing congress in Kyiv and an Indian arms deal with Russia.

What did the news look like on 5 October 2018? Three separate stories stood out, from a prison hunger strike to a sporting gathering in Kyiv and a defence deal with sanctions implications.

Sentsov ends his hunger strike

Oleg Sentsov ended his hunger strike on 5 October 2018, after 145 days.

Boxing congress in Kyiv

On the same day, Kyiv hosted the 56th Congress of the World Boxing Council (WBC). It brought together more than 600 participants from 164 countries, along with numerous stars of the sport.

India, the S-400 and sanctions

Further afield, reports on 5 October 2018 said India was buying the S-400 missile system from Russia, a purchase that could expose it to US sanctions under CAATSA. That law, the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, imposed sanctions on Iran, North Korea and Russia by preventing US companies from doing business with sanctioned entities. The Senate passed it on 27 July 2017 by 98 votes to 2, after the House approved it 419 to 3. President Donald Trump signed it into law on 2 August 2017, though he believed the legislation was seriously flawed.
