Why did Kyiv reject the 11 November 2018 votes?

Summary

A look back at the elections held in the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR and the reaction from Ukraine and its partners.

What happened on 11 November 2018, when elections were held in the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR? The vote drew swift rejection from Ukraine and from several of its partners.

As reported at the time, the European Union, the United States and Japan said that holding the elections violated the Minsk agreements. Germany and France regarded the vote as illegal. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry stressed that Ukraine would not recognise the elections.

A separate commemoration

A few days earlier, on 8 November 2018, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution on marking at state level the 75th anniversary of the start of the deportation of Ukrainians from Poland in 1944–1951.
