Kyiv's parliament ends the Russia friendship treaty

Summary

A look back at the Verkhovna Rada's vote to terminate the bilateral Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership, days after entry restrictions on Russian men.

What did Ukraine's parliament decide on 6 December 2018? The Verkhovna Rada passed a law ending the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

The law provides that the treaty ceases to apply from 1 April 2019, so the termination was set to take effect nearly four months after the vote.

The preceding days

The vote followed another step in the relationship. As reported on 30 November 2018, Ukraine banned Russian men aged between 16 and 60 from entering the country after the imposition of martial law. President Petro Poroshenko said the ban was meant to prevent the formation of "private armies" in Ukraine. Russia said it did not plan to retaliate.

The two measures, taken within a week of each other, marked a further formal break in relations between Kyiv and Moscow.
