What happened in Bucha on 28 August 2026?

Summary
A retrospective on a Russian drone strike on a supply depot in Bucha, and the cross-border strikes in the days before it.
What happened in Bucha, in Kyiv Oblast, on 28 August 2026? A Russian drone strike hit a supply depot in the town, setting off explosions and a fire. At least 37 people were killed, and almost 400 residents were evacuated.
Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said explosives stored near homes had worsened the disaster. That was the central point in his account of why the toll was so high: a strike on a depot became far more lethal because of what was kept close to residential buildings.
The days before
The strike in Bucha came after several days of cross-border attacks. On 26 August 2026, an overnight Ukrainian drone attack was reported to have completely destroyed a Wildberries depot in Tambov Oblast, Russia.
On the same day, Ukrainian drone strikes killed a man and a 14-year-old child in Lipetsk Oblast and a woman in Belgorod Oblast. The Russian defence ministry said its forces had shot down 426 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Also on 26 August 2026, nine people were killed after a Ukrainian strike on a bus in Russian-occupied Luhansk.
The wider setting
Attacks inside mainland Russia have taken place since the full-scale invasion of 24 February 2022. The main targets have been the military, the arms industry and the oil industry, and many of the attacks have been drone strikes. Luhansk Oblast, meanwhile, has been the site of a frontline campaign since 19 September 2022, and parts of it are under Russian occupation.
Taken together, the reports from 26 to 28 August 2026 show drone warfare reaching civilian areas on both sides of the border. In Bucha, the scale of the loss and the evacuation of almost 400 people made it the most deadly incident among those reported across the three days.
