What did Syrskyi's dismissal on 21 July signal?

Summary

A look back at the command change in Ukraine's armed forces and the protests that surrounded it.

What was behind the removal of Ukraine's commander-in-chief, and why did it land amid street protests? By 22 July 2026, a day after the decision, the question was already central to Ukrainian politics.

On 21 July, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi, until then commander of the Joint Forces, as Syrskyi's replacement.

The timing mattered. As reported at the time, the move came amid protests linked to the removal of defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov. One report framed the protests as demands for Syrskyi's removal, while another tied them to the dismissal of Fedorov. Taken together, the reports show a leadership change made while public pressure over the top of the military and defence establishment was visible.

The appointment of Drapatyi, a serving senior commander, put the Joint Forces commander at the head of the armed forces. What the change would mean for the conduct of the war or for the defence ministry was not set out in the reports from the covered period, so the immediate significance lay in the change of command itself and in the protests that accompanied it.
