The day before, on 28 August 2026, a Russian drone strike hit a supply depot in Bucha, in Kyiv Oblast. The strike set off explosions and a fire. At least 37 people were killed, and almost 400 residents were evacuated. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that explosives stored near homes had worsened the disaster.
