What happened over Lithuania on 15 September 2026?

Summary

A retrospective on a drone's flight from Belarus into Lithuania, and two related security episodes that preceded it.

What happened in the skies over central Lithuania on 15 September 2026? A drone crossed from Belarusian airspace into Lithuania and was shot down by a NATO fighter jet over the village of Pratkūnai, in Kaišiadorys District Municipality, near the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant.

The incident came two days after an unidentified object flew over Lithuanian airspace from Belarus towards Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. It was listed among the violations of non-combatant airspace linked to the Russo-Ukrainian war.

A pattern of spillover

States near the conflict have reported numerous violations of their airspace since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. NATO members that Russia has designated as "unfriendly states" because of their support for Ukraine have been particularly affected. Most violations have been attributed to Russian military equipment such as drones and aircraft, though Ukrainian equipment was responsible on several occasions. The most notable was the 2022 Przewodów explosion, in which a stray Ukrainian rocket killed two Polish civilians eight kilometres inside Poland.

The days before

The Lithuanian episode followed other security developments. On 13 September 2026, a Russian drone attacked a train bound for Warsaw, Poland, at Yahodyn station in western Ukraine. The strike came shortly after former UK prime minister Boris Johnson and top EU security officials had passed through the airspace. Former U.S. CIA director David Petraeus was also at the station at the time but was unharmed.

On the same day, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed 10-year sanctions on his former press secretary, Iuliia Mendel, and nine others. They were accused of spreading Russian propaganda and supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine. The measures include asset freezes and trade restrictions.

Why the date matters

Taken together, the events of 13 and 15 September 2026 show the war's reach beyond the front line: a strike on rail infrastructure in western Ukraine, a sanctions decision over alleged propaganda, and an interception by a NATO jet over Lithuanian territory. Russia's invasion began the largest war in Europe since World War II, and Russian troops occupy roughly 20% of Ukraine.

The Lithuanian shoot-down placed a NATO aircraft directly in the response to a drone that had come from Belarus, close to a energy facility at Kruonis.
