What did the weekend before 30 March 2026 show?

Summary

A retrospective on the war's cross-border reach and civilian toll in the days leading up to 30 March 2026.

What did the days immediately before 30 March 2026 reveal about the war's direction? Reports from 28 and 29 March pointed to civilian suffering in Ukraine, strikes inside Russia and a new diplomatic agreement.

On 28 March, a nighttime Russian drone attack on Odesa killed two people and injured twelve more. A maternity hospital was also damaged. The same day, Qatar and Ukraine signed a defence pact that includes cooperation on countering missile and drone threats.

On 29 March, a Russian glide bomb attack on Kramatorsk killed three people and injured thirteen. Also on 29 March, a person was killed by a Ukrainian drone attack in Taganrog, in Russia's Rostov Oblast.

The drone war also reached Finland that day. Several unmanned aerial vehicles were detected across the south-east of the country, and one crashed near Kouvola and was identified as Ukrainian.

Taken together, the reports from those two days show the drone war in several forms: attacks on Ukrainian cities, strikes on Russian territory, a stray aircraft in Finland and a defence agreement that names drone and missile threats explicitly.
