What happened on 31 August 2018 in the region?

Summary

A retrospective on a day marked by an explosion in Donetsk and a Transnistrian announcement, with a Kyiv memorial two days earlier.

What did the region's news look like on 31 August 2018? It was a day dominated by an explosion in Donetsk, alongside a diplomatic announcement from Transnistria.

Oleksandr Zakharchenko, the leader of the so-called DPR, which Ukraine classes as a terrorist organisation, was killed on 31 August 2018 in an explosion at a restaurant in the centre of Donetsk.

The same day, Vadim Krasnoselsky, the president of the unrecognised Republic of Transnistria, announced that he would visit Moldovan President Igor Dodon for talks on 6 September.

A memorial in Kyiv

Two days earlier, on 29 August 2018, 366 white crosses were placed outside the Russian Federation's embassy in Kyiv. They were set up in memory of the victims of the Ilovaisk tragedy.

The three reports come from different places: Donetsk, Transnistria and the Ukrainian capital. Together they show the range of regional news in the final days of August 2018.
